Various Groups on the Island

Posted Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 02:29PM in

I've put together a quick graphic that presents a very basic timeline of the various groups that have inhabited the Lost island, as well as a graphic of individuals and their movements within those groups.

Spoilers!

To start, let me just say that I did this quickly. Let me also say that it is only meant to depict those groups that have very definitively stated to have been on the island as of episode 4.03. Furthermore, I have gone on the assumption that Alex and Danielle are officially defected to the Oceanic group.

There is only a small collection of characters represented. I’ve left off poor Karl, for instance, as well as the kids Emma and Zack. Henry Gale did not make my chart, and I have avoided marking characters that have made no discernable change in affiliation.

Character movements on Lost

The Hostiles are a group of people that inhabited the island originally before the arrival of the DHARMA Initiative. So far no information about where the Hostiles originated or how they long they had been on the island has been revealed. When the Hostiles instigated a purge to murder most members of DHARMA, some of the survivors joined with the Hostiles. The merger resulted in the group that Danielle (and the 815 Survivors) have called the Others.

Richard appears to have been a member of the Hostiles and to have recruited Ben. (Strangely he has not aged since Ben first met him several decades in the past.) Later Richard was also involved in recruiting Juliet to the Others from the outside world. Juliet has since defected to the 815 group, based on a combination of hatred for Ben and desire to leave the island.

The French box refers to a scientific expedition that was marooned on the island sixteen years in the past. Danielle and her daughter, Alex, are supposedly the only remaining survivors of that group; Alex was kidnapped by the Others as a baby, but has now been reunited with her mother thanks to the efforts of the 815s.

Desmond crashed on the island in his boat three years before the arrival of 815. He was drafted into DHARMA by a man named Kelvin, whose survival of the Purge has still not been adressed. After some initial drama meeting the 815 group, he is now basically one of them.

Two other groups I have included are the Black Rock crew and the Freighter arrival. No indication has been given as to the fate of the Black Rockies, and the Freighter group seems to be sticking to their own agenda for the time being, so I have left them both alone.

Note that I have not included the Beechcraft group, as I feel their contribution to the story has been completed. Furthermore, any history of prior habitation has not been divulged. Perhaps the Hostiles were a group similar to the Others; an amalgamation of previous groups that joined together over time. Perhaps they have a link to the mysterious people that built the four-toed statue.

These things remain to be seen.

(As a side note, my visit logs show that someone in Vancouver found my website through the search term “hate paolo and nikki” in Yahoo! Canada. I find that hilarious.)

cool! I feel like I’m a slacking fan… another guy here at work made a spreadsheet to calculate the relativistic velocity of the island based on the missile’s 31 minute time dilation.

I was thinking Henry Gale could fit in the graphic, but his contributions have gone the way of the Beechcraft. Michael however could very much still be important (Accidental815->Others->?? freighter??). And Walt too?

Good point! I plan on amending this graphic once we see how the Freighter situation plays out.

Of course, that assumes that the Freighter situation actually plays out.
