My Site in 2008

The new year is here, and to celebrate I've launched the redesign of my website that I've been working on.

This site has been a long time in development, longer than any other design I’ve done in the past ten years. (Have I really had an online presence that long?)

Interestingly, I don’t know if the extreme amount of time I’ve spent comes across visually, since it’s probably the simplest site I’ve ever done in terms of markup and visuals. Basically I’ve been going through iteration after iteration on the drawing board since the middle of 2006, and with each consecutive version I’ve stripped out more and more.

Over the last two years in particular I’ve learned a lot about markup semantics and styles, in addition to typography and grids. So little by little, as I work on a new version, I keep uncovering little things that bug me and require an overhaul to address.

For now, I’ve been focusing on the grid and readability. Nothing flashy. I think I’ve done well, except for a few issues here and there. One of the big things I wanted to do was re-organize the PHP guts to be a little more modular and play nicer with Textpattern. I’m much better off now than I was 24 hours ago; future updates to the markup and design should be infinitely simpler to execute.

So here’s what needs fixin’:

I find the gray on white hard to read. (I’m using MIE 6. Is that the problem?)

No, it’s personal. :-) The type may be a bit low-contrast, I suppose. I will try using a darker text color.

I like the gray-on-white. It looks nice.

What about the spammers? Don’t you need a captcha or something or is there some other smart way that keeps the baddies at bay?
