The second season finale of Lost was, IMHO, probably one of the best episodes in the history of the show.
Firstly, I totally dig the revelation that Desmond may have been directly responsible for the crash. While we do see what happens when the button isn’t pressed, we don’t know exactly what the full effects are since Desmond turned the failsafe key. I’m unclear as to what that accomplishes, though. Does it curb the effects of the EM charge for the next 108 minutes, or does it finish the job once and for all? If that’s the case, why didn’t the Dharma folks just take that action in the first place?
I also love the re-introduction of the American military dude, now known by the name Inman, as Desmond’s former hatch-mate. In case you didn’t recognize him, it’s the same guy that coerced Sayid into working as an American interrogator during the Gulf War. I wonder how long he’s been there, though: We know the War was in 1991. Desmond arrived at the Swan hatch in 2001, three years before the Flight 815 crash. The Swan orientation filmstrip was dated 1980. Inman states that he “joined” the Dharma Initiative (unlike Desmond and Locke, who were both forced into button duty), so considering it had to have been late 1991 or after when he joined, how long was he there? Was his former partner, Radzinsky, there from 1980 on or did he also arrive later? Such a tangled web.
Now I’m left to speculate about the third season. What will happen with Penny? Will she and Michael cross paths, assuming Michael actually makes it back to civilization? If Michael turns up as the sole survivor of Flight 815, it’s sure to be fairly big news, which will put him in an interesting situation. It’s not in his best interest for the rest of the survivors to be found, since they’ll know what he did and likely be vindictive. On the other hand, I’m sure he’s racked with guilt over double-crossing and abandoning the others (not to mention his little double homicide). And what was the deal with Walt? What made him so special that the Others wanted him the first place? Will he be back next season, or has he been written off?
Someone on a discussion board speculated that some of the current-time action will take place off of the island, as it did for the first time at the end of this episode. I think that would be neat, if we were allowed to see some of the progression in the search for the missing passengers back in the Rest of the World. I don’t think they can simply not address Penny’s search throughout the season after such a dramatic setup.
Also I’ve read guesses that some of the minor characters may shift into the spotlights in the future, now that three of the big leads are in Enemy hands. Of course, we never saw the end of Sayid’s little adventure, so I suppose he could show up and rescue them, but I think it would be cool to do a portion of the season without Jack, Kate and Sawyer at all.
I sure as heck hope they address the whereabouts of Locke, Eko and Desmond in the first episode. I’d miss Locke too much if they keep me in the dark about him.
