The fifth season of Lost is half over, so I figured this would be a good time to catch up on my reviewing. So far, so good: It's the best season yet, but not without its problems.

Spoilers!

The pace has been slightly short of frantic—in nine episodes, we’ve had survivors time-hopping, Locke leaving the island, young Charles Widmore, a hydrogen bomb, Frogurt getting arrowed, survivors disappearing, Hurley arrested, Charlotte dying, young Danielle, Penny & Desmond’s son, Jin’s survival, Ben murdering Locke, five of the Six returning, another plane crash, Christian, Sawyer/Juliet/Miles/Daniel joining DHARMA in the past, Locke’s reincarnation, and a really awesome pendulum-map-island-finding-device-thingie.

At the rate the show is moving forward, there’s very little room for error. It almost makes me wish there were two more seasons to follow; it’s so exciting to see the story propelled forward at this rate.

As always with Lost, the answers to questions are just more questions. Assuming that Ajira 316 crashed on Hydra island in 2008, we now know why the Others were building a runway… but still have no clue as to the reason behind it. Was it on order from Jacob? Just how much about the island’s future can he see? (And darn it, who the heck is he?) We’ve seen the outrigger canoe on the far beach during the time-hopping adventure, so we know that Sa/Ju/Mi/Da have visited the “present” briefly. But where was Jin during that time? Still floating in the ocean? And who shoots at the survivors from a separate canoe? Is it the 316ers?

We’ve finally seen the mysterious Radzinsky, and I was really excited for that. But no further clues as to the role of the Swan, or why a man who was (presumably) well-versed in DHARMA lore would create a blind map on a blast door.

I’m a little disappointed in the passing of Charlotte. Frankly I never saw her character as being all that important… but she was introduced as having some pre-existing knowledge of the island, and was then revealed to have been born there. I was convinced that her purpose would be to explain the island’s cultural history, perhaps shedding some light on the original inhabitants, but then WHAM! she was dead. Rough.

We’ve seen the “Temple”, and the French science team, but still no idea as to the true nature of the smoke monster or who put it in place. One certainty is that Danielle did not lie about her team members losing their heads. But why being dragged under the Temple had anything to do with it remains to be seen.

One thing that I find somewhat questionable occurred in the most recent episode. Namely, Ethan. If that baby is the same Ethan that was with the Others (and set into motion the entire Survivors/Others relationship) then they are just trying too hard.

That baby was born in 1977. I was also born in 1977. No way is Ethan 27 years old in Season One. I was 27 years old during Season One and Ethan is clearly at least ten years older than me. In fact the actor, William Mapother, was born in 1965. Something about this Ethan thing just makes me think they want to tie some ends that don’t need tying.

At any rate it’s excellent so far. I’m glad to see some full DHARMA action and can’t wait for the second half of the season. Onwards Lost!
