A Small Web Project

Recently I have created rochesterlindyhop.com, a small website featuring a Google calendar and Vanilla forum. I'm hoping to provide a central location for Rochester Lindy Hop and swing dancing discussion and announcements.

Historically, Lindy Hop dancers in Rochester have communicated through the use of the Rochester Lindy Yahoo! group, and checked the Rochester Swing Dance Network’s online calendar for updates periodically.

I (and a few others) find these solutions woefully inadequate.

The Yahoo! group is mostly full of out-of-town news, and there’s no way to filter it. My plan is to drop the Yahoo! group and get everyone using the forum, which we will be able to at least divide into categories so that people can only read the things they care about. Plus with RSS feeds available on everything nowadays, an email list is clunkingly archaic.

The Google calendar will include multiple other users’ calendars so that many people throughout the community can update their events. Then dancers around town can simply check one location using the familiar Google interface. I plan to make some visual changes to the interface once Mike’s server gets a few updates installed.

You’ve all been warned!
